Motivational Monday’s Episode 6: Maxence Pepin – Founder of Illicit

And we are back with another episode of  Motivational Monday’s, this week we have Maxence Pepin with us a solid hustler with a huge passion for helping up and coming artists get the exposure they deserve.

Who are you and what’s your background?
My name is Maxence Pepin, I own a record label named ILLICIT, produce music under the “Midsplit” alias, I am also an independent digital promoter.
What does your job consist of on a day to day basis?
On a day to day basis, my job is to constantly develop the brands I work on, I always need to be finding new music for my label. I am also working on how to automate certain tasks and use technology to get more work done as if I was a team of 50 people. I work day to day as a hustler for Strange Fruits, in which my job is to find new music, new artists and new contacts to grow our network online. I use a lot of time to find people where no one is looking, such as QQ Music, Apple Music, Deezer and other secret stores. I’m always talking to people on the phone or by messages (or both at the same time) to grind my way up the ladder.

What’s your biggest achievement to date?
My biggest achievement is doing promotional work for people who inspire me, a notable example is Borgeous. I’ve done some promotion for him on Soundcloud, driving millions of people to his profile and his music. The other things I’m super proud of is ILLICIT, who is on the way to becoming a lifestyle brand (super-duper secret project)

Any tips and tricks that you wish you knew when you started?
When I started, I wish I had more confidence in myself, because I often limited myself and put barriers in my own way about what I can or can’t do. It took me a long time to understand that I was good at what I do, that I need too trust myself in order to develop more and more projects. Another tip I wish I knew, is that important industry people are just regular people to who you can talk to, I used to want to act all super square and professional, but a normal conversation can take you much further!

For the readers looking to pursue a career in your field , do you have any advice for them?
Some advice I can give people starting out a career in the music business is to get some good experience early by taking internships, I learned A LOT by working at some big promotion companies and eventually developed my own brand and services. The other piece of advice I can give people who want to follow a similar path to mine is to not be scared to start some really big unachievable projects, because most of the time they are achievable, you’re just not looking at them in the right direction and mindset.

How do you overcome days where you have no motivation?
Some days are harder than others, you just want to give up and get a regular job and live a simple life, it’s a normal feeling when you’re not achieving anything special for a while, you just have to look back at everything you’ve done and look at where you were a year ago. You always have something to be proud of, you have no reason to stop.

Any upcoming stuff you would like to announce to the readers?
An upcoming huge project that I have is my upcoming clothing line at ILLICIT. I really feel like it’s time to expand my company from a label to a lifestyle brand, this project is going to be MASSIVE!
